PENNINGTON, Sir John, 3rd Bt. (c.1710-68), of Muncaster, Cumb.

In 1745 Pennington, as colonel of the Cumberland and Westmorland militia, took part in the defence of Carlisle against the rebels, doing his best, but without success, to prevent his men from surrendering the town as soon as it was invested.G. C. Mounsey, Carlisle in 1745, p. 65. In the same year he had succeeded his father as Member for Cumberland, which he represented unopposed in four Parliaments. He voted against the Administration on the grant for Hanoverian troops in 1746, but in 1747 he was classed as a government supporter. In the next reign he adhered to Bute.

He died 26 Mar. 1768.
