Slater was one of only two townsmen to represent Portsmouth in Parliament during Elizabeth’s reign. Little is known about his family or private life. On 17 June 1556 Agnes Slater, perhaps his wife, was buried in Portsmouth, but he must have died without children, as his next of kin was Henry Atkinson. His will, of which one Katherine Godfrey claimed to be executrix, was pronounced invalid in November 1591.R. East, Portsmouth Recs. 312, 324, 343, 449, 679; PCC 89 Sainberbe.
