LEWIS, William III.

Probably second son of Edward Lewis of The Van, Glamorgan, this William Lewis may have been educated at Shrewsbury (1574), specially admitted to the Inner Temple in 1576 at the request of the treasurer, George Bromley, a Welsh judge, and called in 1584.Clark, Limbus , 46-7, 56, 320, 390; Cal. I.T. Recs. i. 283, 329. The address given for the 1576 entrant in the I.T. Adm. Reg. (Glyn Taff, Eglwysilar, near Caerphilly, Glam.) may be erroneous, for the Inner Temple man was certainly William Mathew’s cousin. He married either Joan, daughter of Sir Philip Champernown of Dartington, Devon, widow of Robert Gamage of Coity, Glamorgan, or her daughter-in-law Gwenllian, daughter of Thomas ap Jenkin Powell of Glyn Ogwr in the same county, widow of John Gamage of Coity, and in either case had three sons and two daughters. In 1587 he was—along with (Sir) Edward Stradling—executor of the will of their ‘cousin’ William Mathew of Radyr, and he sounded Sir Edward on finding a place for one of his sons who was ‘not very capable of learning’.Cal.
