The Pooles had been seated in Cheshire for several centuries. Poole received from his father certain lands in the county at the time of his marriage, but, dying v.p., the main inheritance passed to his eldest son, also called John, about whom little is known. His return for Liverpool was probably due to his father-in-law, a kinsman of the Earl of Derby. His own religious views, if any, are unknown, but in 1580 his father was one of the justices of Cheshire ‘not known to be of any religion, and therefore suspected to be papist’. Poole died 28 July 1601 and was buried two days later.
