UMFRAY, John, of Canterbury, Kent.

In 1389 Umfray acquired from William Medmenham (a one-time royal official whose properties had been looted during the Peasants’ Revolt) two messuages, four shops and 100 acres of land situated in Canterbury and on the Isle of Thanet. Already established in business as a draper, he was to be assessed for alnage on cloth sold in Kent in 1394-5, and four years later he supplied a length of fabric needed for the reckoning board in the chamber of the jurats of Canterbury. By that time he had himself been chosen to serve on the governing body of the city. He is not recorded after his re-election as a jurat for the sixth time at Michaelmas 1409.CP25(1)109/233/646; Arch.
