TRONEY, John, of Hereford.

Members of the Troney family had lived in Hereford since at least the beginning of the 14th century. In 1379 John stood bail at the assizes held in the city on behalf of a servant of Richard Nash, and on 1 May the same year, at nearby Aconbury, he witnessed a grant of land to the cathedral. From then on he regularly witnessed conveyances in Hereford, usually in his capacity as a bailiff, an office he was to hold for no fewer than seven annual terms.Trans. In 1381 Troney was associated with members of the Herefordshire family of Skydemore as a feoffee of property at Holme Lacy. At the parliamentary elections held at the guildhall in October 1382 he found mainprise for the appearance of Nicholas Prille, and before January 1389 he had been made executor of the will of another citizen, William Palmer. Later that year Troney was one of the nine leading members of the community authorized to conduct negotiations with the dean and chapter following a breakdown in relations between them. In 1396 he was elected mayor of Hereford, which post he continued to hold for two years. A notarial instrument of April 1398, witnessed by Troney in his capacity as mayor, recorded that it was in the courtyard of his house that Joan Berde appointed a priest to act on her behalf in her appeal in a matrimonial suit. Troney’s single election to Parliament came towards the end of his career. Before October 1403 he, Thomas Buryton and Richard, father of John Abrahall, each entered into bonds for 100 marks to ensure the appearance before the Herefordshire j.p.s of Jordan Biggleswade, abbot of Dore, charged with illegally dispossessing the true abbot some seven years previously, and it was also in association with Buryton that Troney acted as a feoffee of the Hereford property of Walter Wormsley.CP25(1)83/48/12; C219/8/7; Cal.
