Members of the Troney family had lived in Hereford since at least the beginning of the 14th century. In 1379 John stood bail at the assizes held in the city on behalf of a servant of Richard Nash, and on 1 May the same year, at nearby Aconbury, he witnessed a grant of land to the cathedral. From then on he regularly witnessed conveyances in Hereford, usually in his capacity as a bailiff, an office he was to hold for no fewer than seven annual terms.
