biography text

More may be added to the earlier biography.2 The Commons 1386-1421, iv. 844-6.

In 1434, during his last term as sheriff, Whittington was associated with Robert Andrew* and John Throckmorton I* (whom the MP would appoint overseer of his will) in bringing an assize of novel disseisin against Sir Maurice Berkeley I* regarding property in Siston, although it is unclear whose was the principal interest at stake.3 C66/435, rot. 17d.

As a common pleas lawsuit shows, Whittington’s widow was still alive in 1448. She was the defendant in this action, brought by William Nottingham II* and his then wife, Elizabeth. The couple accused her of abducting Elizabeth’s young son (apparently by her previous marriage) at Gloucester.4 CP40/748, rot. 433d; 749, rot. 449d.
