The biographies of both John and Thomas Wydeville in the CP (xi. 16-17) contain a number of errors, some of which arise as a result of the author’s mistaken belief that John’s second son and namesake lived on until 1403 or after, and also had a son named Thomas. Our MP was, moreover, the son-in-law and not the great-grandson of Thomas Lyons and Margaret, his wife (Test. Vetusta ed. Nicolas, i. 138).

J.p. Northants. 20 Dec. 1382 – Mar. 1397.
The CP (xi. 16-17) creates unnecessary confusion between our MP, who was certainly dead by February 1401 (CCR, 1399-1402, p. 311; JUST 1/1514 rot. 12), and his own younger son, John. The latter seems to have died quite young, and was not the recipient of a commission of array dated September 1403 (CPR, 1401-5, p. 287) which was issued posthumously to the subject of this biography, and not to anyone else of the same name. Although described as a knight by the CP (loc. cit.), John Wydeville is not thus designated in any contemporary sources.

He has been distinguished from the John Wycombe who was present at the election of the dean of Wells in 1378, became proctor for the chapter before 1394, practised as a notary public and was still living in 1412 (HMC Wells, i. 282, 284, 356, 487-8; ii. 27; CCR, 1399-1402, p. 596; Som. Med. Wills (Som. Rec. Soc. xvi), 57).
