RENNIE, George, of

b. 23 Apr. 1801,The IGI gives 23 Apr. 1801, although Dod MS, iii. 923, gives 23 Apr. 1802. The earlier date appears to be confirmed by press reports of his death which listed Rennie as being ‘in his 59th year’ when he died in March 1860 (The Standard, 27 Mar. 1860) and by the 1841 census, which listed him as aged 40. T. M. Hocken, Contributions to the early history of New Zealand (1898), 7, also gives 1801. 3rd but 2nd surv. s. of George Rennie (d. 6 Oct. 1828), of Phantassie, Haddingtonshire, and his cos. Marion, da. of Mr. Rennie, of Castleton, Haddingtonshire. educ. Italy and Greece. m. 25 Aug. 1824, his cos. Jane, da. of John Rennie, of 27 Stamford Street, Southwark, London, 4s. (?1 d.v.p.)Richard Temple Rennie was listed as Rennie’s fourth son, but only three sons appear to have survived him: J. Foster, Men-at-the-bar (1885), 389. d. 22 Mar. 1860.
