Notes

The existence of several other men called John Preston (including one from Southwark who held office from 1409 until his death in 1413 as marshal of the King’s bench: Sel. Cases King’s Bench (Selden Soc. lxxxviii), p. xx) makes identification difficult. That the judge who came from Westmld. was one and the same man as had interests near Lewes, is established by Cat. Glynde Place Archs. ed. Dell, no. 1504, and CCR, 1405-9, p. 292; 1413-19, p. 70.
