Notes

To Brougham, Life and Times (3 vols. 1871), his doctored version of his life and correspondence, the Brougham mss at Univ. College London have been preferred. Brougham and his Early Friends ed. Buddle Atkinson and Jackson (3 vols. 1908) covers his early career, and the most recent biographies are by Chester New, Brougham to 1830 (1961) and Frances Hawes, Henry Brougham (1957). A. Aspinall, Lord Brougham and the Whig Party (1927) remains an authoritative source on his political career.
