STORME, John, of Hythe, Kent.

Storme owned land in the hundred of Hayne, near Hythe, on which as a Portsman he claimed tax exemption in 1395, the year of his only recorded return to Parliament. Maltolts paid at Hythe subsequently show him trading in corn, oats and hay, and as receiving annual rents of 13s.4d.E179/237/57; Hythe jurats’ bk. C, ff. 9, 57. Storme was among the leading men of Hythe whose death the town’s unscrupulous common clerk, John Smalwode, allegedly plotted in 1397. When this came to light in 1407 Smalwode was dismissed from office, and in the following year Storme and others began litigation against him for threatening behaviour.Reg. 1, f. 22; CCR, 1405-9, p. 397.
