REDSTONE, William, of Southwark, Surr.

Redstone was probably the son of the William Redstone who held office as coroner of Surrey until 1379 and subsequently acquired a considerable amount of property in the Southwark area.CCR, 1377-81, p. 194; CAD, iii. A4017, A4067; CP25(1)231/64/44; SC6/73/3627, 3631. Some of these shops and tenements may well have descended to the younger Redstone, for the latter was quite evidently a man of importance in the borough. In February 1408 he served as a juror at an inquisition ad quod damnum held to examine a proposed gift of land in Bermondsey to London Bridge. Four years later Geoffrey Malston, a clerk, settled all his property in the manor of Bermondsey upon Redstone and four associates, probably as his trustees.Stowe 942, f. 106; Harl. Others were equally anxious to involve him in their affairs, for between November 1422 and February 1432 (often together with John Deken, his colleague in the Parliament of May 1421) Redstone was called upon to witness at least 12 local deeds, many in connexion with the assignment of property and rents to the use of the wardens of London Bridge. Meanwhile, in June 1425, he and six of his neighbours, including John and Isabel Tasburgh, whose feoffee he then was, were confirmed in possession of all the late John Parke’s estates in Southwark.CCR, 1422-9, pp. 44, 71, 205-6, 319, 322, 407; Harl. Nothing else is known of his career, although it seems likely that the William Redstone who sat for Southwark in the Parliaments of 1447 and 1449 (Nov.) was his son.
