MAUCHELL, Robert.

The identity of this Member has proved impossible to establish, although he almost certainly belonged to the influential Mauchell family which had lived at Crackenthorpe in Westmorland from the 12th century onwards. He may, indeed, have been a younger son of John Mauchell, who held Crackenthorpe of the Cliffords and was made mayor of the nearby town of Appleby at the end of the 14th century. In this event, he would have been related by marriage to William Thornburgh, whose daughter became the wife of John’s eldest son.J. Nicolson and R. Burn, Westmld. and Cumb. i. 344-6. Only one Robert Mauchell is mentioned in the family charters, in 1349, as a younger son of Thomas Mauchell and his wife, Emma Wharton (Cumb. and Westmld. Antiq. and Arch. Soc. viii. 419-25). Interestingly enough, it was Richard Wharton who accompanied Mauchell to the Leicester Parliament of 1414.
