John’s putative father, Richard, who owned a house in Tavistock situated next to the abbey mill and a park nearby at Crelake, was still alive in November 1421 when he stood surety at the parliamentary elections for the Tavistock representatives.Tavistock Parish Recs. ed. John himself held lands at Petertavy, for which he paid Tavistock abbey 5s. a year, and in the town itself he leased from the abbey two tenements and a messuage. The abbot, as lord of the borough, employed him as an attorney at the assizes held at Exeter in 1423 and 1424, although if he was a lawyer by profession he must have completed his training several years earlier. At the elections for the Parliament of 1425 he provided securities for attendance on behalf of John Fortescue (the future chief justice), then returned for Tavistock. In June 1428, described as ‘of Tavistock, alias of Croudell’ (perhaps Crowndale near the town), Julkin took out royal letters of protection as going overseas in the retinue of Thomas Montagu, earl of Salisbury, then lieutenant general in Normandy and France, and he may, therefore, have taken part in the siege of Orléans where Salisbury met his death.Devon RO, S21 ff. 89, 134; JUST 1/1536 m. 37, 1540 m. 43d; C219/13/3; DKR, xlviii. 260. He returned a year later in time to attend his fourth Parliament, which met in September 1429. Julkin was named as a witness to several deeds dated at Tavistock from 1434 onwards, including, in 1446, an important grant to the abbey; and he acted as a feoffee of property in the locality on behalf of Richard Estecote from about 1436 to 1445. He attended the shire elections held at Exeter for the second Parliament of 1449. In June 1450 and August 1451 he was party to transactions concerning premises in Tavistock and Sutton Vautort, being required to deliver seisin to William Bourgchier, Lord Fitzwaryn, Sir William Bonville II (now Lord Bonville) and other trustees.Tavistock Parish Recs. 75; Devon RO, Bedford mss B117/9, 16, 17, D2/115-17, 173, D30/27; CCR, 1447-54, p. 18; C219/15/7.
