Walter may have been related to Henry Hotot, a priest who, in 1368, was installed as chaplain of the chantry of St. Edmund on Totnes bridge by presentation of William, Lord Zouche of Harringworth.H.R. Watkin, Totnes Priory and Town, 278. Described as ‘of Exton’, a village on the Exe estuary, in October 1387 Walter witnessed a grant for the local vicar. He was, however, definitely involved in the affairs of Totnes: in 1389, the year before his election to Parliament, he was recorded as one of two collectors of fines levied in the borough court; in 1401 he witnessed a deed dated there; and by 1405 he had become a member of the local guild merchant.CCR, 1385-9, p. 489; Add.
