HENDE, William, of Wallingford, Berks.

A carpenter by trade, Hende was living outside the borough at the time of the poll tax of 1379, to which he contributed 4d. After 1381, however, he appears in the records of the Wallingford courts, and he subsequently came into possession of various tenements and other property there. In addition to his own parliamentary service, he stood surety for the attendance in Parliament of John Coterell in 1390.Ibid. W/JBb/54, W/FZ/3; Boarstall Cart. (Oxf. Hist. Soc. lxxxviii), nos. 837-8; CP25(1)12/77/9; C219/9/7. It was probably he who received a royal pardon in June 1408 for the death of John Mordone, another carpenter, killed in the previous year. In 1412 he acquired a croft called ‘Frobbings’ in Wallingford, which he conveyed to Richard Dalgate eight years later; and subsequently, while acting as an executor of the will of Robert Deffont, in 1425, he sold Dalgate an adjacent barn and garden.
