GREGG, Francis (1734-95), of Mitcham, Surr.

When in 1773 Lord Carlisle’s extravagance, together with his rashness in having stood surety for Stephen and Charles Fox, had brought him to the brink of ruin, he turned to Francis Gregg for advice.HMC Carlisle, 252, 254-6. Gregg, an attorney by profession, took charge of Carlisle’s affairs, restored them to some order, and even recovered from Charles Fox a large proportion of his debt. Gregg also became a close friend of Carlisle and his political associates, who frequented his house at Mitcham.Ibid. 448, 455, 467, 513, 535. In 1789 he was returned on Carlisle’s interest at Morpeth to hold the seat till Carlisle’s heir came of age. There is no record of his having spoken in the House.

Gregg died 29 Mar. 1795.
