In 1754 Hayward was returned on the interest of his cousin George Augustus Selwyn. In Dupplin’s list of 1754 he was classed as ‘pro’ among the group of Henry Fox’s friends. On 16 Feb. 1758 he unsuccessfully applied to Newcastle to make his brother dean of Gloucester: ‘I have attended the service of my country with great assiduity for one whole Parliament and half another, which may be presumed to have some merit, nor have I troubled your Grace before.’
He died 14 Mar. 1781.
