Ashburnham belonged to a junior branch of an old Sussex family, with estates near Hastings, which they frequently represented. Returned in 1715 for Seaford by the future Duke of Newcastle, he gave up his seat to Henry Pelham on accepting a sinecure in 1717, but was brought in again by Newcastle for Hastings at the next general election, voting with the Government. He retired from Parliament on grounds of ill-health in 1741,Add. 32696, f. 401. retaining his sinecures till his death, 7 Nov. 1755.
