The grandson of John Blakiston, regicide Member for Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the Long Parliament, Blakiston served in the army in the West Indies, becoming lieutenant-governor of Montserrat with the acting rank of colonel. Appointed governor of Maryland in 1698, he retired on grounds of health in 1701, receiving the thanks of the court of delegates who appointed him their agent in London. From 1706 onwards he served as agent for Virginia in London at a salary of £300 p.a.
