Chapman was heir to a wealthy London merchant family, whose trading interests had drawn them from Shropshire to London by the early seventeenth century.B. I’Anson, Chapman Fam. i. 39. Returned as an opposition Whig for Taunton in 1741 after a contest, he voted against the Government till 1746, when he voted for the Hanoverians. He did not again seek re-election. In 1757 his house in Hertfordshire was attacked by an anti-militia mob.Yorke, Hardwicke, iii. 32. He died 29 Jan. 1781.
