CHERNOCK, Sir Boteler, 4th Bt. (1696-1756), of Holcot, Beds.

The Chernocks acquired their Bedfordshire property in 1541;VCH Beds. iii. 387. both the 2nd and 3rd baronets represented the county in Parliament. Sir Boteler Chernock succeeded to an impoverished estate because his father

is forced to sell some part of his paternal estate to defray expenses he has formerly spent on elections, having been always too honest and upright while in Parliament to sacrifice the liberties of his country for a place or pension.Duke of Bedford to Duchess of Marlborough (undated), Marlborough mss.

Returned as a Tory at a by-election for Bedford in 1740, he was again unopposed in 1741, voting against the Administration in all recorded divisions. Defeated in 1747 by the 4th Duke of Bedford’s Whig nominees, he did not stand again. He died in 1756 (buried 4 Aug. at Holcot).
