GORE, Charles (?1711-68), of Tring, Herts.

In 1739 Gore succeeded his father as a Tory at Cricklade, from which he withdrew after a double return in 1741, when he chose to sit for Hertfordshire, where he had been returned unopposed. Like his uncle Thomas he voted against the motion for Walpole’s removal in February 1741.Coxe, Walpole, iii. 563. In 1742 he was one of the opposition Members included in the court list for the committee of inquiry into Walpole’s Administration, but he was not elected to it.Walpole to Mann, 1 Apr. 1742. He continued to vote with the Opposition till the end of 1744 when, with his uncle, he went over to the Administration, voting for the Hanoverians as a ‘new ally’ in 1746. He was classed as a government supporter in 1747. The second Lord Egmont wrote in his electoral survey, c.1749-50, that Gore ‘ought to be routed by all means if possible, for he is a thorough enemy in his heart, and closely attached to the present system.’

He died 15 Feb. 1768.
