Gregory came of one of the leading families of Nottingham, which he represented as a Whig, with the support of successive Dukes of Newcastle. Obtaining a place after George I’s accession, he voted with the Government in all recorded divisions, except on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts in 1719, when he was absent. In 1727 he reluctantly stood down to facilitate a compromise and was returned by the Duke of Newcastle for Boroughbridge, a proposal to bring him in for Retford having fallen through owing to local opposition.
He was buried at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, 10 Apr. 1746.
