Benjamin Haskins Stiles’s father was partner and heir of his maternal uncle Robert Stiles (d. 1680), a wealthy Amsterdam merchant and native of Wantage, Berks. His sister married Sir John Eyles, 2nd Bt.. On inheriting his younger brother’s fortune in 1719, he acquired large estates in north Wiltshire, including Bowden Park, Bishop’s Cannings, near Devizes, and the prebend manor of Calne which carried an electoral interest in that borough.
