HERVEY, John (1696-1764), of East Betchworth, Reigate, Surr.

Hervey, the son of a former M.P. for Reigate, was put up for the borough in 1739 by his friend, Lord Hardwicke, to hold the seat for Hardwicke’s son, Philip Yorke, who was still under age. Returned unopposed, he voted with the Government, standing down in favour of Yorke in 1741. In 1747, when Yorke was standing for both Cambridgeshire and Reigate, Hervey was invited by Hardwicke to represent Yorke at Reigate, making the speech proposing him and his cousin, Charles Cocks, for the borough.Hardwicke to Philip Yorke, 16, 20 and 26 June 1747, Add. 35351, ff. 103-5, 108, 114-15. He died 30 July 1764.
