Descended from an ancient and royalist Warwickshire family, Holte inherited an estate of ‘not less than £4,000 per annum’. On coming of age he stood as a Tory for Lichfield, where he had cultivated an interest by purchasing the market tolls for £400 for the benefit of the city and contributing £100 to a new market house.
