Jolliffe inherited from his first wife property in Petersfield, carrying an electoral interest there, on which he returned his uncle Sir William Jolliffe in 1734. In 1738 he was appointed receiver general of the duchy of Lancaster, paying the previous holder a large sum of money to resign. Next year he bought the manor of Petersfield from Edward Gibbon for £5,693,
