JOLLIFFE, John (?1697-1771), of Petersfield, Hants.

Jolliffe inherited from his first wife property in Petersfield, carrying an electoral interest there, on which he returned his uncle Sir William Jolliffe in 1734. In 1738 he was appointed receiver general of the duchy of Lancaster, paying the previous holder a large sum of money to resign. Next year he bought the manor of Petersfield from Edward Gibbon for £5,693,H. G. H. Jolliffe, Jolliffes of Staffs. 32, 34, 45; Jolliffe mss at Ammerdown Park, Som. in possession of Ld. Hylton. thereby gaining control of the second seat. Returned in 1741, on the retirement of his uncle, he voted consistently with the Administration and was classed as a government supporter in 1747. His fortune was further increased by a second marriage and by the death of his uncle, who left him a considerable share of his estate. In the 2nd Lord Egmont’s electoral survey, c.1749-50, Petersfield is described as ‘in Jolliffe, entirely with us’. He died 31 Jan. 1771.
