Lewen, according to the petition against him, ‘by most notorious bribery’, menaces and promises, ‘procured himself to be returned’ head of the poll at Wallingford, ‘although he was altogether a stranger to the electors till a very few days before the election’.CJ, xxi. 50. As a Tory he voted consistently against the Administration. He lost his seat in 1734, lodging a petition which he subsequently withdrew. He died 1 Apr. 1743.
