Lister’s family had long been settled in the neighbourhood of Clitheroe, where they had acquired an interest, which he was able to turn after the 1722 election into control of one seat. A Tory, he consistently voted against the Government, speaking on 7 May 1728 against a vote of credit.Knatchbull Diary, app. 124, 128. He transferred the family seat from Arnoldsbigging to Lower Hall in Gisburn, which his father had acquired from Sir John Assheton in 1697, and which he rebuilt on a grand scale in 1724.Lyster-Denny, loc. cit.

He died 15 May 1745.
