MARSHALL, Henry (1688-1754), of St. Mary at Hill, London and Theddlethorpe, Lincs.

Marshall was returned for Amersham as a Tory on the interest of the Drake family, to whom he was related,See Yorks. Arch. Jnl. vii. 94-96. voting consistently against the Administration. On 31 Mar. 1736 he voted against the Westminster bridge bill, which was opposed by the common council of the city of London.Harley Diary. In 1738 he was made a member of a committee of aldermen formed to bring complaints against Spanish depredations before Parliament, of several committees of the common council, and of the caucus of the corporation.Stuart mss 204/144; see under LONDON. He was one of the Tories who voted against the motion for Walpole’s dismissal in February 1741.HMC Egmont Diary, iii. 192. In 1745, according to George Heathcote, he and Sir John Barnard ‘industriously and artfully surprised the City’ into voting a loyal address on the rebellion.Marchmont Pprs. ii. 345-7. At the end of his mayoralty he received the thanks of the common council for

his faithful discharge of and constant attendance to the duties of that high office, his steady attachment to the true interest of this corporation, for his frequent calling us together in common council, and his readiness on all occasions to promote the welfare of his fellow citizens.Jnl. vol. 58, 3 Oct. 1745.

In 1747 he was classed as Opposition. He died 2 Feb. 1754.
