James Metcalfe, whose parentage has not been ascertained, acquired his Bedfordshire property after 1715.VCH Beds. iii. 219. In 1727 he stood unsuccessfully for Bedford, but on petition a compromise was arranged, under which he was declared duly elected.See BEDFORD. Although he stood on the Tory interest, he supported the Administration in Parliament, voting with them on the civil list arrears, April 1729, and the Hessians, February 1730. Taken seriously ill by 26 Nov.,F. St. J. Orlebar, Orlebar Chron. 297. he was buried 4 Dec. 1730 at Roxton.
