NELTHORPE, James (c.1675-1734), of Lynford Hall, Norf.

‘Rugged Nelthorpe’, so called, ‘not from any rigid virtue, but from his pride and ill-nature’, acquired the manor of Lynford from Sir Charles Turner in 1717, building Lynford Hall, where Sir Robert Walpole often spent a night on his way to Houghton.HMC Portland, vi. 164-5; Blomefield, Norfolk, ii. 263, 264. Returned for Tiverton, no doubt on Walpole’s recommendation, he voted consistently with the Administration, except on the excise bill, when he was absent. He died 20 Apr. 1734 leaving his natural son, James Nelthorpe, to Walpole’s guardianship.PCC 139 Ockham.
