NORTHEY, William (c.1690-1738), of Compton Bassett, nr. Calne, Wilts.

William Northey, who had sat as a Tory for Calne in the 1713 Parliament, was returned for Wootton Bassett, another neighbouring borough, in 1715. In the same year he bought the Compton Bassett estate from the heir of Sir Charles Hedges, M.P.Marsh. Hist. Calne, 304. Classed in 1715 as a Whig who would often vote with the Tories, he supported the septennial bill in 1716 but followed his father in opposing the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts and the peerage bill in 1719. Defeated at Wootton Bassett in 1722 and 1727, he did not stand again, dying 11 Nov. 1738, aged 48.
